SANT’ANATOLIA
Location: Sant’Anatolia, Rieti (Italy) — 42.1482 N, 13.2995 E
Dating: 4th–2nd centuries BC
Characteristics: Sant’Anatolia contains two small stretches of polygonal masonry separated by approximately one kilometer. On the hillside to the south of the village and behind a more modern building sits a terrace of rough polygonal masonry about 30-40 meters in length. Only a few of the blocks can rightfully be called megalithic, and most evidence of tight joinery has been reduced to erosion. However, in the village proper, a small section of polygonal blocks can be found at the back of a storage shed which show much higher precision in the joinery. These blocks (unfortunately partially blocked by construction equipment) may have been protected from exposure much more than those sitting on the hillside thus maintaining their original look.
Polygonal classification: Types I-III (Lugli)
Attribution: The site is usually attributed to the Aequi tribe, a pre-Roman peoples of the Cicolano area.
