EXPLORING THE POLYGONAL WORLD ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

SAN FELICE CIRCEO

Location: San Felice Circeo, Lazio (Italy) — 41.2307 N, 13.0819 E

Dating: 7th-4th centuries BC

Characteristics:Circeo’s summit was topped with an impressive polygonal acropolis made of precisely fitted masonry. Below Monte Circeo in the local village one can also find remains of rougher cyclopean walls. A particularly interesting feature of the site within the acropolis is a water well made of rough polygonal blocks. Its exact function is unknown.

Attribution: Debate is still ongoing between a pre-Roman Latin origin (Volsci) and the Roman Republic.
