EXPLORING THE POLYGONAL WORLD ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

MINTURNO

Location: Minturno, Lazio (Italy) — 41.2548 N, 13.6997 E

Dating: 7th-4th centuries BC

Characteristics: The surviving stretch of polygonal wall extends over 120 meters. The stonework appears more closely related to ashlar masonry at first glance, but closer inspection reveals polygonals shapes and uneven courses. It includes a tunnel and truncated ogival gate dated by some scholars to the 7th–6th centuries BC (although this particular section of the wall is unaccesible as it sits on private property).

Polygonal classification: Type IV (Lugli)

Attribution: The site is attributed to the Aurunci people and was part of the ancient settlement of Pirae before Roman conquest.
