EXPLORING THE POLYGONAL WORLD ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

FONDI

Location: Fondi, Latina, Lazio (Italy) — 41.3601 N, 13.4249 E (Fondi); 41.3523 N, 13.4421 E (Villa Placitelli)

Dating: 7th-3rd centuries BC

Characteristics: Fondi has two locations with polygonal walls. In the town’s center on a stretch of exposed wall, one can find polygonal blocks of impressive precision. The polygonal wall looks to have square towers and an entryway which was later covered. Even thousands of years after being built, the wall is structurally sound enough to support medieval era buildings above. Just outside the town one finds a polygonal platform of more rectangular blocks at Villa Placitelli. The unique shape of the blocks hints at a multicultural or multistylistic approach to polygonal masonry tht remains a mystery.

Polygonal classification: Types II-IV (Lugli)

Attribution: Both sites are attributed to the Volsci, a pre-Roman people of the region. The exact dating of the walls is debated.
