EXPLORING THE POLYGONAL WORLD ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

COLLEFEGATO

Location: Collefegato, Rieti (Italy) — 42.1946 N, 13.2513 E

Dating: 4th–2nd centuries BC

Characteristics: The backside of the Madonna delle Grazie church reveals a polygonal wall of small- to mid-size blocks of mortarless polygonal stonework. It rises approximately 5-7 meters above the ground. The upper courses also contain small holes which indicate a later repair possibly using Roman clamps and cranes. Aside from the polygonal masonry, a large support column of bulging rectilinear blocks helps to support the wall. Whether this particular support structure is original or not is unclear.

Polygonal classification: Types II-III (Lugli)

Attribution: The wall is usually attributed to the Aequi but was later reused in Roman and Christian phases.
