EXPLORING THE POLYGONAL WORLD ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

CAIAZZO

Location: Caiazzo, Campania (Italy) — COORDINATES 41.1767 N, 14.3655 E

Dating: 4th–3rd centuries BC

Characteristics: Caiazzo (or Caiatia as it was known during Roman times) sits on a strategically important position overlooking the Volturno Valley. Unfortunately, the small section pictured is all that remains of the once imposing polygonal wall circuit. The blocks were constructed from limestone into large, irregular shapes with the biggest measuring over 1 meter in length.

Polygonal classification: Types II-III (Lugli)

Attribution: The polygonal walls are attributed to a particular tribe of the Samnites (Sidicini) before Roman control.
