EXPLORING THE POLYGONAL WORLD ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

ALZANO

Location: Alzano, Rieti (Italy) — 42.2434 N, 13.2012 E

Dating: 3rd–2nd centuries BC

Characteristics: The polygonal wall of Alzano can be found up the hill from a local road. The stretch of mortarless masonry is approximately 20-30m long and shows signs of damage and collapse. What remains, however, are mid-size blocks fit with relative precision. The site is also notable for a grotto of polygonal masonry. The Grotta del Cavaliere is in the vicinity of the polygonal wall and may have had importance for the original pre-Roman builders.

Polygonal classification: Types II-III (Lugli)

Attribution: The wall and grotto are usually attributed to the Aequi with later Roman era use.
